Porcelain crowns remain one of the most trusted, versatile solutions for saving heavily compromised teeth. Custom-fabricated as full-coverage "caps," they entirely encase a damaged or weakened tooth down to the gum line, restoring its shape, strength, chewing function, and appearance. At Sundent Dental Clinic, we use high-grade dental ceramics, colour-matched to your surrounding teeth, to save your natural tooth root wherever possible.
Key Benefits
- Structural reinforcement: Holds a cracked or weakened tooth together, preventing fractures that could otherwise require extraction.
- Full functional restoration: Once cemented, the tooth regains its normal chewing capacity.
- Natural aesthetics: Layered porcelain replicates the translucency and texture of real enamel.
- Long-term reliability: With good oral hygiene, crowns typically last 10–15 years or longer.
When Is a Porcelain Crown Recommended?
Porcelain crowns are indicated when conservative options like fillings or laminate veneers aren't sufficient — for example, after root canal treatment (to protect a now-brittle tooth), for large cavities or fractures that leave too little healthy enamel for a filling, and as the visible restoration on top of a dental implant or as an anchor for a bridge.
The Treatment Process
A porcelain crown is typically completed in two visits. At the first, the tooth is numbed and shaped, digital impressions are taken, and a temporary crown is fitted. Your permanent crown is then milled, layered, and glazed in our dental laboratory using CAD/CAM technology. At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the new crown is checked for fit, bite, and colour match before being permanently bonded.
